Several approaches exist to improve the quality of evolution. In this paper, a priori knowledge applied to open-ended evolution will be discussed. It will be focused at assessing the positives and negatives related to extending the complexity of evolved systems and limiting the evolutionary exploration, respectively. Relevant knowledge relates to functional modularity, structural regularity as well as hierarchy.
