Open almost any biology textbook and you will find the following definition: Evolution is change in gene frequency. This definition reflects the conventional view of natural selection and the conventional view of heredity. Natural selection occurs because individuals vary, some of these variations are linked to differences in fitness, and some of those variants are heritable (Lewontin 1970). Because variants that are
not heritable cannot play a role in natural selection, and because the mechanism of inheritance is presumed to be genetic, evolution is defined as change in gene
frequencies.
